Field Service Management

Part of the worlds-biggest-software-project initiative.

An AI-native, open-source field service management platform for work order scheduling, dispatch, mobile technician workflows, and parts management.

Field Service Management (FSM) coordinates technicians, work orders, parts, and customer interactions across distributed service operations. This project targets service-heavy industries — utilities, telecoms, HVAC, home services, medical devices, and manufacturing — that today must choose between expensive enterprise suites and feature-thin SMB tools. The goal is a platform that pairs the optimisation depth of incumbents with AI capabilities they have only begun to ship.

Why Field Service Management?

  • Enterprise leaders such as IFS, Salesforce Field Service, and SAP/ClickSoftware deliver deep optimisation but require complex implementations and enterprise-tier contracts that can reach $500,000–$2 million+/year.
  • Microsoft Dynamics 365 Field Service is powerful but requires a full Dynamics 365 investment rather than a standalone deployment.
  • Vertical SaaS such as ServiceTitan ($9.5B valuation, TTAN) excels for trades but is expensive for smaller companies and weak on multi-depot operations and parts/inventory.
  • SMB-friendly tools (Jobber from $9–$249/user/month, Housecall Pro from $49/month) are easy to adopt but lack advanced scheduling optimisation, robust inventory, and reporting.
  • No open-source FSM platform is currently market-leading, leaving a gap for a self-hostable, standards-aligned alternative with modern AI built in.

Key Features

Work Order & Dispatch Core

  • Work order creation, assignment, status tracking, and completion documentation
  • Manual scheduling and dispatching with role-based access for dispatchers, technicians, and managers
  • Audit trail logging of all actions and updates
  • Customer notifications for arrival, status, and completion
  • Automated invoice generation and payment processing

Mobile Technician Experience

  • iOS and Android mobile app with offline capability and sync-back
  • Access to job details, customer history, and service records from the field
  • Signature capture, photo documentation, and on-site payments
  • Real-time GPS technician tracking visible to dispatchers
  • In-field estimating and proposal generation

Scheduling Optimisation & Operations

  • AI-powered scheduling optimisation with dynamic route planning and skill matching
  • Real-time dynamic rescheduling that adapts to disruptions, cancellations, and traffic
  • Multi-depot and multi-region support with unified scheduling
  • Recurring service contracts with auto-scheduling and auto-invoicing
  • Customer self-service portal for creating, tracking, and managing work orders

Parts, Assets & Predictive Operations

  • Parts and inventory management across technician vans and warehouses
  • Asset management integration linking work orders to asset lifecycle and warranties
  • IoT sensor integration for asset tracking and predictive maintenance alerts
  • Advanced analytics and reporting on technician productivity and margin

AI & Intelligence Layer

  • Computer-vision job documentation auto-populating work-order fields from photos
  • Predictive parts demand forecasting to pre-stock vans from historical patterns
  • AI-powered job triage of incoming requests for urgency, skill match, and resolution time
  • Customer-facing AI assistant for status updates, rescheduling, and feedback
  • Augmented reality remote assistance connecting technicians with experts

AI-Native Advantage

Incumbent optimisation engines are largely rule-based; AI-native FSM continuously re-optimises routes as new jobs, cancellations, and traffic conditions arrive, maximising daily throughput. Computer vision auto-extracts equipment models, serial numbers, and part numbers from technician photos, eliminating manual work-order entry. Predictive forecasting pre-stocks vans before failures occur, reducing return visits, while AI triage assesses incoming requests for urgency and skill before a dispatcher is involved.

Tech Stack & Deployment

The project anticipates self-hosted and cloud deployment modes with native iOS and Android mobile apps backed by an offline-first sync architecture. Integrations target accounting systems (QuickBooks, Xero), ERP connectors, IoT sensor pipelines, GPS/telematics (OBD-II), and payment processors. Compliance workflows align with ISO 9001:2015 (quality management), ISO 55000 (asset management), OSHA 1910.147 (lockout/tagout), the FMCSA ELD mandate, and where applicable AS9100/AS9110 for aerospace service.

Market Context

The global FSM software market is estimated at $3–5 billion in 2026 with double-digit CAGR projected through 2030. Pricing spans $9–$250/user/month for SMB tools, $50–$150/user/month for mid-market platforms, and $500,000–$2 million+/year for large enterprise contracts. Primary buyers are field operations managers, service directors, dispatch coordinators, fleet managers, and digital transformation leads in service-heavy industries.
