Freelancer Management System

Part of the worlds-biggest-software-project initiative.

An open-source, AI-native platform for contractor onboarding, compliance, payments, and 1099 management -- built to replace expensive per-seat SaaS with a self-hostable alternative.

Freelancer Management System is an end-to-end platform for companies that engage independent contractors. It handles onboarding, contract generation, invoice approval, payment scheduling, and tax filing in a single workflow. The primary audience is HR, finance, and operations teams at mid-market companies, staffing agencies, and gig-economy platforms managing tens to hundreds of contractors.

Why Freelancer Management System?

  • No credible open-source option exists. Every significant freelancer management tool on the market -- Deel, Gusto, Remote, WorkMarket, Wingspan, Papaya Global -- is proprietary SaaS with no self-hosted or open-source alternative.
  • Per-contractor pricing punishes scale. Incumbent pricing ranges from $6 to $50 per contractor per month. For a company managing 500 contractors, that is $36,000 to $300,000 per year before enterprise add-ons.
  • Misclassification risk is unmanaged by most tools. Only a handful of platforms offer worker classification analysis, and none provide it before contract creation -- when it matters most. Most rely on the operator's own judgment.
  • Global compliance is fragmented. Deel and Remote lead on international coverage, but UK-specific IR35 compliance lives only in YunoJuno, and URSSAF (France) is underserved across the board. No single tool covers all major jurisdictions with depth.
  • Project and deliverable tracking is an afterthought. Most FMS tools focus on payments and compliance but offer little visibility into whether contractor spend is producing results.

AI-Native Advantage

The AI capabilities in this system address problems that incumbents either ignore or handle with manual processes. An AI classification engine analyses 25+ engagement factors -- control, financial arrangement, relationship type -- to flag misclassification risk before a contract is issued, not after onboarding is complete. Intelligent 1099 reconciliation automatically matches payments across invoices, ACH transfers, and platform records to generate accurate tax forms without manual auditing. Invoice anomaly detection identifies duplicate invoices, inflated hours, and off-contract billing before payment approval. Spend forecasting uses historical contractor utilisation data to predict future workforce costs.

Tech Stack & Deployment

The system is designed for self-hosted, cloud, or hybrid deployment. Core payment orchestration targets US ACH (NACHA rules) and international wire transfers with multi-currency support. Tax filing integrates with the IRS IRIS API for 1099-NEC e-filing. The API layer follows OpenAPI specification conventions with webhook support for contract, payment, and compliance lifecycle events. A portable contractor identity layer using W3C Verifiable Credentials is on the roadmap to enable reusable onboarding across multiple clients.

Market Context

The global gig economy market is valued at USD 674 billion in 2026 and projected to reach USD 2.52 trillion by 2035 (CAGR ~15.8%), with the freelance platforms segment specifically forecast to grow to USD 24.16 billion by 2033 (Business Research Insights, DemandSage). An estimated 83 million Americans -- 36% of the US workforce -- work freelance in 2026. Key buyers are HR and finance teams at mid-market companies managing 50-500 contractors, operations teams at staffing agencies, and platform businesses running large contractor pools.
