Funeral Home Management

Part of the worlds-biggest-software-project initiative.

An AI-native, open-source platform for funeral home arrangement intake, case management, cremation tracking, and accounting.

Funeral Home Management is a candidate project to build a modern, open-source case management system for independent funeral homes, crematories, and cemetery operators. It targets the operational core of death-care businesses — arrangement intake, cremation chain-of-custody, FTC Funeral Rule compliance, family collaboration, and accounting — and is designed for small and mid-sized independent operators currently served by closed, fragmented commercial SaaS.

Why Funeral Home Management?

  • The funeral home software market is fragmented across a dozen-plus closed commercial SaaS vendors (Passare, CRaKN, Osiris, SRS Computing, FrontRunner, Tribute Technology, Gather, Halcyon, Parting Pro and others), with no platform commanding dominant share.
  • No identified incumbent offers a fully open REST API or documented webhook ecosystem for third-party developers, leaving integrators and adjacent vendors blocked.
  • Mobile experience remains degraded relative to desktop in most platforms (with Gather as the notable exception), despite operational work happening in cars, hospitals, and homes.
  • AI capabilities across incumbents are shallow — obituary writing is widespread, but no platform offers AI-driven FTC GPL compliance monitoring, cremation anomaly detection, or personalised grief aftercare at scale.
  • All identified products are commercially licensed, closed-source SaaS; no open-source platform with substantive feature coverage exists in this domain.

Key Features

Case & Arrangement Management

  • Decedent records, service scheduling, staff assignment, and case status tracking
  • Contract generation with at-need itemised pricing and mandatory FTC GPL disclosures
  • eSignature collection for authorisations, contracts, and cremation permits
  • Preneed case management with policy tracking and at-need conversion
  • Calendar and scheduling for services, staff, rooms, and vehicles

Cremation Workflow & Compliance

  • Cremation chain-of-custody tracking with QR code or barcode scanning at each workflow stage
  • AI-verified identity checks at each cremation workflow stage with automatic audit log generation
  • AI-driven FTC Funeral Rule GPL compliance checking against mandated disclosure requirements
  • Alignment with CANA standards for cremation ID verification, chain of custody, and record retention

Family Collaboration & Aftercare

  • Family-facing portal for collaborative arrangement input and real-time case updates
  • AI obituary writer drawing on structured case data
  • Aftercare programme automation with scheduled, AI-personalised family communications
  • AI-curated grief support resources tailored to relationship type and service type

Accounting, Payments & Multi-Location

  • Accounting integration (QuickBooks as minimum; native ledger as stretch)
  • Online payment processing (credit card + ACH) with branded payment links
  • Multi-location support with per-location and per-director financial reporting
  • ASD FuneralSync and similar answering-service API integration

Backlog Capabilities

  • VRDR FHIR-based EDRS integration for electronic death registration
  • Broadcast memorial streaming integration
  • Mobile-native app with full feature parity to desktop
  • Preneed prospect analytics using demographic and at-need case pattern data
  • Real-time scheduling optimisation across staff, fleet, and facility resources

AI-Native Advantage

AI capabilities are integrated into the operational core rather than bolted onto marketing. The platform automates arrangement intake interviews to reduce conference time and documentation errors, monitors published price lists against FTC Funeral Rule requirements, verifies identity at each cremation chain-of-custody stage, identifies preneed sales opportunities from community demographics and at-need patterns, and curates personalised aftercare communications by relationship and service type — all areas where incumbents either ship shallow features or none at all.

Tech Stack & Deployment

The project is intended as an open-source, cloud-deployable case management platform with a documented REST API and webhook ecosystem — closing the integrator gap left by every incumbent surveyed. Deployment expectations include cloud-hosted SaaS for small operators (mirroring the ~50% cloud share of the market) with self-hosting available for multi-location operators with stricter data residency needs. Target integrations include QuickBooks (Desktop and Online), ASD FuneralSync, payment processors, eSignature providers, and Homesteaders Life preneed policy data; longer-term targets include VRDR FHIR for electronic death registration. Mobile-first UX, in the spirit of Gather, is a design constraint rather than an afterthought.

Market Context

The global funeral home software market was valued at approximately USD 1.86 billion in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 5.23 billion by 2033, a CAGR of roughly 10.3% (Verified Market Reports; Market Research Future). North America accounts for around 40% of revenue, driven by independent funeral homes seeking digital tools to compete with consolidators such as Service Corporation International and Carriage Services. With cremation rates exceeding 60% of dispositions, the primary buyers are independent funeral home owners and crematory operators who need cremation workflow management, FTC compliance support, and accounting integration without the per-seat pricing and closed ecosystems of incumbent SaaS.
