In-App Notification Center

Part of the worlds-biggest-software-project initiative.

An open-source, AI-native in-app notification platform unifying product announcements, changelog publishing, NPS surveys, and feature feedback in a single self-hostable stack.

The In-App Notification Center provides product, growth, and engineering teams with a single system for delivering product notifications, publishing changelogs, running NPS surveys, and capturing feature feedback. It targets SaaS teams who currently stitch together multiple proprietary tools (Beamer, AnnounceKit, Refiner, Pendo) or who adopt developer-only infrastructure (Novu, Knock) without a product-manager-friendly UI.

Why In-App Notification Center?

  • Bootstrapped-friendly tools (Beamer, AnnounceKit, UserGuiding) start at $49–$79/month, and full product experience platforms (Pendo, Appcues) cost $15K–$140K+/year — leaving a wide gap for a quality open-source alternative.
  • Novu is the only fully open-source option but requires Kubernetes expertise and offers no no-code product manager interface, no native NPS/survey capability, and no built-in analytics dashboard.
  • Refiner delivers strong NPS but does not cover changelog or feature announcements; Beamer makes NPS a paid add-on; AnnounceKit limits widget customisation — no incumbent provides the full feature set without trade-offs.
  • AI-driven notification timing, automated changelog generation, and sentiment analysis on open-text feedback are nascent across incumbents, leaving room for an AI-native entrant.
  • Every SaaS product needs this capability, yet no quality open-source solution exists that combines product-manager UX with developer-friendly self-hosting.

Key Features

In-App Delivery & Widgets

  • In-app notification widgets with positioning options (top, bottom, center, side) and theming for light/dark mode and brand colours
  • Multiple widget patterns (badge, popup, sidebar, drawer, modal, top bar) for progressive disclosure
  • Embeddable notification center component with real-time updates via WebSocket
  • Template library of pre-built announcement and survey templates

Changelog & Announcements

  • Changelog content management with editor and preview
  • Auto-publication across channels: in-app, email, RSS
  • Feature request voting board with community voting and roadmap display
  • Comment and reaction collection on updates for direct user feedback

Surveys & Feedback

  • NPS survey with configurable scale and follow-up branching
  • Behaviour-triggered survey delivery (on page visit, after delay, custom events)
  • Multiple question types (NPS, CSAT, CES, PMF, custom)
  • Real-time reporting dashboards with NPS trend tracking

Targeting & Orchestration

  • Segmentation engine targeting by user attributes, feature flags, and cohorts
  • Workflow orchestration with multi-step sequences, branching, delays, and digests
  • User preference controls: do-not-disturb, frequency caps, channel opt-out
  • Saved segment filters reusable across campaigns

Multi-Channel Delivery & Integration

  • In-app and email delivery in MVP; push and SMS on the roadmap
  • REST API and webhooks for triggering notifications from product backend events
  • Provider-agnostic channel integration approach
  • Analytics covering delivered, open, and click counts

AI-Native Advantage

AI capabilities target the gaps left by rule-based incumbents: optimal send-time prediction per user from historical engagement patterns, automated changelog generation from git commits, release notes, and Jira tickets, and sentiment analysis on open-text NPS responses with automatic theme tagging and routing of negative feedback. Personalised announcement copy adapts framing to user role and feature usage history, and churn-risk scoring auto-enrols disengaged users into targeted re-engagement workflows.

Tech Stack & Deployment

Designed for both self-hosted and cloud deployment, with a Docker Compose option targeted at simplified self-hosting (with deployment templates for Railway, Fly, Render). Architecture follows the multi-service pattern proven by Novu (API, Worker, WebSocket, Dashboard, MongoDB, Redis). Embeddable real-time notification center component uses WebSocket for live updates. Relevant standards include the Web Push API (W3C), Webhooks for backend triggers, JSON Feed / RSS for changelog distribution, NPS methodology (Satmetrix/Bain), and GDPR / CCPA compliance for behavioural tracking and survey consent.

Market Context

The in-app messaging and notification platform market sits within the broader customer engagement platform market, estimated at $25+ billion globally and growing at approximately 11% CAGR. Incumbent pricing spans bootstrapped-friendly tools at $49–$79/month (Beamer, AnnounceKit, UserGuiding), usage-based developer infrastructure (Novu, Knock), and enterprise platforms at $15K–$140K+/year (Pendo, Appcues). Primary buyers are product managers, customer success teams, growth teams running NPS, and developers building notification infrastructure as a platform capability.
