School Information System

Part of the worlds-biggest-software-project initiative.

An AI-native, open-source K-12 student information system that unifies records, attendance, grades, and parent communication with predictive intelligence built in from day one.

A modern Student Information System (SIS) for public districts, private schools, and international school networks who need to manage student records, grades, attendance, scheduling, and parent communication. The project targets the gap between dated incumbent platforms and basic open-source alternatives by combining FERPA-compliant data governance with AI-powered early-warning, scheduling, and compliance tooling.

Why School Information System?

  • Incumbents are concentrated and expensive: PowerSchool (23% market share, acquired by Bain Capital for $5.6B in October 2024) and Infinite Campus (10%) charge $5–$20 per student per year, pushing district contracts into the $50K–$2M+ range.
  • The January 2025 PowerSchool data breach exposed millions of student records, exposing the reputational and regulatory risk of closed, centralised SIS platforms and creating an opening for security-first alternatives.
  • Existing open-source options (openSIS, RosarioSIS, Fedena) lack US state reporting (CALPADS, PEIMS, Ed-Fi SLDS), mature IDEA / special education workflows, and modern UX — they are not credible replacements at district scale.
  • AI capabilities across the incumbent landscape are bolt-on or partner-driven (e.g. Skyward-Panorama); no major SIS ships AI-native predictive early-warning, schedule optimisation, or IEP compliance monitoring as core platform functionality.
  • International and private-school buyers are underserved: Classe365 covers multi-currency and multi-language deployments but leaves analytics, GDPR tooling, and US compliance gaps that no single platform addresses end-to-end.

Key Features

Student Records & Compliance

  • Student demographic records with configurable custom fields and document storage
  • FERPA-compliant data governance with audit logging, role-based access, and data processing agreement workflow
  • IDEA-aligned IEP tracking, service logging, and progress note management for special education
  • Health records module supporting immunisations, medications, allergies, and nurse visit logs
  • COPPA-aligned verifiable parental consent workflows for users under 13

Attendance, Grading & Scheduling

  • Daily and period-by-period attendance tracking with automated parent and guardian notification
  • Gradebook supporting both traditional (A–F) and standards-based grading, with configurable rubrics
  • Report card and transcript generation with configurable templates
  • Master schedule builder with conflict detection, course catalog, and teacher assignment

Parent & Student Engagement

  • Web-responsive and mobile self-service portal for grades, attendance, and messaging
  • Multilingual parent portal with automated communication translation
  • Configurable, event-driven notifications for attendance events, grade thresholds, and deadlines
  • Behaviour and discipline incident tracking with MTSS intervention workflow

Interoperability & Reporting

  • IMS OneRoster 1.2 for rostering to LMS and third-party edtech tools
  • Ed-Fi API support for state longitudinal data system (SLDS) submission
  • SIF (Schools Interoperability Framework) compatibility for legacy K-12 systems
  • CSV and API-based data import for migration from incumbent SIS platforms
  • State-specific compliance reporting hooks (e.g. CALPADS, PEIMS) as a phased target

Administration & Finance (Optional Modules)

  • Integrated fee and tuition management for private and faith-based school deployments
  • Multi-currency fee management and multi-campus administration for international networks
  • GDPR-compliant data residency configuration for European deployments

AI-Native Advantage

AI is built into the core platform rather than bolted on. The system models multi-factor dropout and chronic absenteeism risk months ahead of traditional grade and attendance thresholds, and continuously audits IEP deadlines and service delivery logs against IDEA requirements so case managers are alerted before gaps occur. AI-assisted master schedule construction generates conflict-free, equity-aware schedules that account for teacher preferences, room constraints, and IEP requirements simultaneously. Real-time anomaly detection flags implausible grade distributions, duplicate enrollments, and missing mandatory fields as data is entered, and context-aware multilingual draft messages to parents replace generic automated alerts.

Tech Stack & Deployment

The platform is designed for both self-hosted and managed cloud deployment, so districts and international networks can choose data residency that matches their regulatory regime. Interoperability is anchored on open K-12 standards: IMS OneRoster 1.2 for rostering, Ed-Fi for state data exchange, and SIF where legacy interoperability is required. A REST API and plugin architecture provide extension points for state-specific reporting, payment gateways, and LMS integrations such as Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams.

Market Context

The global Student Information System market was valued at approximately $15.44 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $34.97 billion by 2031 at a 14.62% CAGR (Mordor Intelligence). District SaaS contracts typically run $5–$20 per student per year, with totals of $50K–$2M+ for K-12 public districts; primary buyers are district IT directors and superintendents, private school administrators, state education agency CIOs, and international school network operators.
