Spa & Salon Management

Part of the worlds-biggest-software-project initiative.

An AI-native, open-source platform for appointment booking, therapist scheduling, retail, and memberships across spas and salons.

Spa & Salon Management is an open alternative to the dominant commercial platforms (Mindbody, Vagaro, Zenoti, Boulevard) for independent beauty professionals, multi-chair salons, day spas, medical spas, and hotel/resort spa operators. It combines core booking, POS, CRM, and inventory with AI-driven automation for the front desk, scheduling, and retail recommendations.

Why Spa & Salon Management?

  • Incumbent platforms are expensive: premium suites such as Boulevard ($425/month), Booker ($470/month), and Zenoti (~$400/month) typically require 12-month contracts that lock out smaller operators.
  • Lower-cost options like Fresha and Square Appointments either rely on transaction fees that scale poorly or offer minimal spa- and salon-specific features.
  • AI capability is currently concentrated in a single enterprise vendor (Zenoti's Zeenie assistant), leaving the long tail of independents and mid-market operators without AI-first tooling.
  • Medical spas need HIPAA-compliant clinical documentation, which most general-purpose tools (e.g. Square Appointments) do not provide, while clinical-first tools (e.g. AestheticsPro) are awkward for day spas.
  • Newer modern entrants (Mangomint, GlossGenius) demonstrate appetite for cleaner UX without long-term contracts, but remain proprietary and closed.

AI-Native Advantage

AI is treated as a first-class layer rather than an add-on. An AI receptionist can answer inbound calls, book and reschedule appointments, and collect deposits without human involvement. Client records surface treatment history, product preferences, skin or hair notes, and birthday recognition automatically at appointment time. Dynamic therapist scheduling optimises room utilisation, transition times, and certification matching, while predictive retail recommendations and revenue forecasting use historical booking, local event, and seasonal data to right-size the rota.

Tech Stack & Deployment

The project targets web and mobile clients backed by a hostable service suitable for self-hosted, cloud, or hybrid deployment. Compliance work spans HIPAA (for medical spa records and before/after photography), PCI DSS (for POS and online deposits), GDPR/CCPA (client data and marketing consent), GHS/SDS (chemical product inventory), and ISO 31000 (treatment-incident risk management).

Market Context

The software sits within a global wellness industry exceeding USD 6 trillion, with the spa and salon software segment estimated in the hundreds of millions and growing at roughly 10–12% CAGR. Incumbent pricing spans free (Fresha, Square Appointments) and ~$24/month (GlossGenius) at the solo end up to $400–$470+/month enterprise tiers (Zenoti, Mindbody, Boulevard), and incumbents are well-funded — Mindbody has raised over $380M, Fresha $100M at a $1B+ valuation, Zenoti $160M Series D, and Boulevard $70M Series C. Primary buyers are independent beauty professionals, multi-chair salon owners, day spa operators, medical spa practitioners, and hotel/resort spa directors.
